All our custom designed hidden door products can be used in place of an existing door or included as a special feature in new construction or remodeling projects.

Our Hidden Door by Design products are built by master craftsmen using hand selected, premium quality, solid core wood veneers. The front, sides, back, cabinet box and shelves match since they are constructed of the same solid core wood veneers. Poplar and birch are used for our paint grade products. All our shelves are adjustable. Some shelf edge styles have solid wood nosings.

All our hidden door units are shipped unfinished, sanded and ready for painting or staining to match your woodwork and cabinetry. We want your hidden door to blend with your existing cabinetry so that it truly will be “hidden.”

All our full-size hidden door products feature our ball bearing hinge and concealed steel reinforcement system for added strength and rigidity. Our reinforcement system is designed to reduce the possibility of twisting or sagging even when a bookcase is filled with 500 pounds of books — the maximum recommended weight. Our ball bearing hinges ensure that even a large unit will open and close smoothly with the touch of a finger.

For smaller hidden door units, including smaller bookcases, cabinets, full length framed mirrors, billiard cue storage units and other products with a maximum exterior depth of 8”, we use either ball bearing hinges, Rixson hinges or a piano hinges. The type of product and the weight it’s designed to hold determine the type of hinge we use and whether or not a concealed internal support system is built into the unit.

We offer cherry, alder, maple, red oak, hickory, walnut, African mahogany, knotty pine and birch in premium quality, solid core wood veneers. Other woods may be available on request. We use a combination of poplar and birch for our paint grade products. Virtually all our solid core wood veneers are NAUF (no added urea formaldehyde) products.

We build both in-swing and out-swing hidden door units. They can be hinged on the left or right.

In-swing: In-swing hidden doors may have mitered casing at the top, crown molding or a header. Rosettes are optional. The maximum swing arc for an in-swing hidden door is approximately 120 degrees.

Out-swing: The casing travels with the door on our out-swing units requiring a butt joint to the header. A crown molding or header is used with or without rosettes. The maximum swing arc for an out-swing door is approximately 90 degrees.

Our interactive Design Center allows you to customize your Hidden Door by Design product with your choice of wood and optional trim selections including shelf edge details, drawer fronts, door panels, casing, crown molding and rosettes. As you design your hidden door, you will see the architectural drawing and the price reflect each selection you make.

All our hidden door products can be ordered without optional trims. This allows you to provide your own trim so that your hidden door matches your existing cabinetry, casing and baseboards.

Please visit our design center to view illustrations of all our custom trim selections.

Shelves: Our full-size hidden door bookcases include five adjustable shelves. Additional shelves may be ordered.

Standard ¾” shelves are constructed from the same wood product as the rest of the unit. Several nosing trims are available.

Premium 1 1/2” shelves are also available at a slightly higher cost. They are constructed of the same wood product as the rest of the unit with solid wood nosings in a selection of edge trim styles. A full bullnose edge looks especially nice on a 1 1/2” shelf.

Drawer Fronts and Door Panels: We have a nice selection of panels for drawers and cabinet doors. These are optional items since you may prefer to have them made on site to match the existing cabinetry in your home.

Casings: We offer several styles of casings. However, you may prefer to use your own casing which matches the casing and baseboard in your home. If you supply your own casing, keep in mind that it needs to have a minimum width of 3 ½”.

Headers, crown molding and rosettes: These are optional trim items. Please visit our Design Center to see all our products and trim selections.

Door Jam: The door jam is included with all hidden door products

We can build custom, fixed bookcases and cabinets to match the custom hidden door unit you design on our interactive Design Center. These are used primarily in a library or office where you have a series of matching bookcase units and only one is a hidden door bookcase. If we build all the units, you can be assured that they will match perfectly so that the hidden door remains “hidden.” Once you have designed a custom unit on the Design Center, you also will be able to get a price for a matching fixed unit.

The exterior width of our full-size hidden door bookcases and cabinets with our ball-bearing hinge and concealed, steel reinforcement system is approximately 12 1/2”. These full size bookshelves and cabinets have approximately 10 1/4” of interior depth to provide you with very useable storage space. Drawers have an approximately interior depth of 8” which gives you a perfect place to store your CDs or DVDs.

The width of a hidden door bookcase or cabinet, including the door jam, is approximately 5” narrower than the width of the rough opening. Our full size hidden door units require a casing with a minimum width of 3 1/2”. A hidden door unit that is shallower in depth allows you to have either a slightly wider unit or a slightly narrower casing.

Our smaller hidden door products have a maximum exterior depth of 8” and an interior depth of 7”. The width of our standard series hidden door products, including the door jam, is approximately 3 1/2” narrower than the width of the rough opening. Although the casing can be slightly narrower for our fixed bookcases and cabinets, if you are combining fixed and operable units, we suggest keeping all casings the same width, which is a minimum of 3 1 /2” for the operable units. .

A 96” x 30” x 13” hidden bookcase door with a door jam and 5 shelves weighs approximately 275 pounds.

Detailed installation instructions are included with each Hidden Door by Design unit. Although they are not difficult to install, for best results we recommend that they be installed by a finish carpenter.

At the time of contract signing, we require a down payment of 50% of the total price. The balance is due when your door is ready to be shipped.

We warrant our workmanship and materials for ninety (90) days from the date of delivery. Hinges and other working parts are covered for one year after delivery.
